Contrary to popular belief, commissioned work is frequently less expensive than the cost of existing paintings. This is because there are no gallery commissions included in the price, and also because the artist does not purchase matting and framing that the client may replace.
The typical commission begins with a meeting to understand the client's vision of the painting, after which the subject or landscape is photographed (if necessary). The photos are then reviewed and one or more are selected for painting. The client is encouraged to observe the progress of the painting at any stage. After completion, the artist works with the client during the framing process.
